Cultural Humility Training
Cultural humility, a concept developed by Dr. Melanie Tervalon and Dr. Jann Murray-García (1998), transcends traditional diversity and inclusion training by promoting an ongoing process of self-awareness and respect for others' cultural identities. It involves a lifelong commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique, aimed at addressing power imbalances and cultivating mutually respectful partnerships that are vital for successful collaboration and service delivery.
During our 1 day training participants engage in an exploration of their own cultural identities, privileges, and the power dynamics these create in professional settings. Through dynamic facilitation, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities, the training provides the skills necessary to approach every professional and personal interaction with sensitivity, openness, and respect.
Key Learning Objectives:
-
Introduce concepts of culture, cultural identity, and intersectionality.
-
Introduce the principles of, and differences between, cultural competency and cultural humility and how we can move towards a blended approach.
-
Explore power, privilege, and active allyship in the workplace.
-
Review EDI initiatives through a cultural humility lens.
-
Present case studies to allow for discussion related to practical tools and strategies for implementation.
